How to Verify a Name Before You Commit

1. Domains: use RDAP or an accredited registrar

DNS records do not reliably tell you whether a domain is unregistered. A domain can be registered and have no active DNS records, and a domain without DNS records can still be registered. The authoritative way to check registration is through ICANN’s RDAP lookup or an ICANN-accredited registrar.

  • An ICANN-accredited registrar’s search tool — registrar inventory varies by TLD.
  • Remember: “registered” does not always mean “not obtainable.” Some registered domains are parked or listed for sale.

2. Social handles: check each platform directly

Handle availability changes constantly and is platform-specific. Search directly on Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and any niche platform relevant to your project. NameSpark does not query social APIs or guarantee handle availability.

3. Trademarks: search official databases

Trademark clearance is separate from domain and handle availability. Before commercial use, search relevant trademark registers for your target markets.
