Frequently Asked Questions

Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines) and counting non-empty segments. Punctuation attached to words is stripped before counting. Hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one word. Numbers like "1,000" count as one word. This follows the standard convention used by most word processors including Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and WordPress.

Reading time is based on the average adult reading speed of 238 words per minute for silent reading, as established by research from Brysbaert's meta-analysis (2019). Speaking time uses 183 words per minute, the average conversational speech rate. Both are rounded up to the nearest minute. For more accurate estimates, these rates may vary based on text complexity and individual differences.

Pages are estimated using the standard manuscript format: 250 words per page (double-spaced, 12pt font). This is the industry standard used by publishers, academic institutions, and platforms like Medium. Single-spaced documents typically contain about 500 words per page. The calculation is approximate — actual page count depends on font size, margins, spacing, and formatting.

Sentences are detected by sentence-ending punctuation: periods (.), exclamation marks (!), and question marks (?) followed by a space or end of text. Abbreviations like "Mr." or "Dr." may be incorrectly counted as sentence boundaries. Ellipses (...) are not counted as sentence endings. This method provides a close approximation suitable for most writing purposes.
